Hyderabad: AIG Hospitals, a leading centre of excellence in gastroenterology, has made a pioneering leap in gastrointestinal (GI) diagnostics with the introduction of PillBot, a state-of-the-art robotic capsule endoscopy technology. Developed by US-based medical innovator Endiatx, PillBot is set to revolutionise the way GI conditions are diagnosed and treated in India.
This cutting-edge technology was unveiled at AIG's Gachibowli facility, here, with experts such as Dr Vivek Kumbhari, Chair of the Department of Gastroenterology at the Mayo Clinic, and Dr Alex Luebke, Co-founder of Endiatx, in attendance.
The device is a tiny, swallowable robot measuring 13mm by 30mm. Despite its small size, it is equipped with advanced cameras, sensors, and wireless capabilities, enabling it to navigate the gastrointestinal tract while transmitting high-resolution, real-time images directly to physicians. The technology provides a non-invasive, sedation-free alternative to traditional endoscopy, offering a more comfortable experience for patients without compromising diagnostic accuracy.
Dr D Nageshwar Reddy, Chairman of AIG Hospitals, expressed his excitement about the introduction of the device. "This technology is a monumental leap forward in gastroenterology," he said. "It combines precision with patient convenience, giving us a glimpse of the future of diagnostic care. We are committed to bringing the world's best innovations to India, and this partnership with Endiatx is a testament to that vision." Dr Reddy also highlighted that while PillBot is currently in the research phase, its potential to transform GI care is immense, particularly in terms of reducing the need for invasive procedures and improving cost-efficiency.
The integration of AI with the device further enhances its capabilities. Dr Rakesh Kalapala, Director of the Centre for AI and Innovation at AIG Hospitals, emphasised the significance of this collaboration: "Our partnership with Endiatx is not just about showcasing a product; it’s about advancing the frontiers of medicine. AIG’s contribution to real-world clinical data is crucial for improving the device and accelerating the development of AI-driven autonomous diagnostics."
While device is still undergoing clinical trials and has not yet received FDA approval, its introduction marks a significant milestone in the future of gastrointestinal care in India. AIG Hospitals’ collaboration with Endiatx is expected to set new standards in non-invasive diagnostic technology, offering hope for more efficient, accurate, and accessible GI care.
